About malware in your site

Actually , if you site connect to Google Webmaster,
it already monitor for u for malware?

I not prefer using wordfence , etc plugin in here.

What I mean Google webmaster literally already they will scan malware on your site
if happen noticed , will email to you under security issue in your google webmaster

They should...

Bare in mind any half decent malware author will be able to obfuscate their code so most of these don't show up

I will not rely totally on Google to protect me, sometime there are new malware that Google has Not yet capture as malicious code on sites. just as Google update thier virus scanners, hackers also update thier malwares to pypass the latest updates adding an antivirus to protect you is essential because it constantly scans your site for malicious codes and instantly protect you when a theme or plugin contain such updated codes .

I'd argue that anti virus software hasn't been effective against modern threats for at least a decade.

google chrome, firefox and pretty much all browsers, well except for IE which is the best browser to download other browsers share common systems to detect a virus. sometimes a virus can be detected on a site and google chrome will warn you while the same site will open with no warning on firefox. regardless its better to be safe than sorry.having a virus scanner or antivirus on a site can alert a webmaster of potential threats before even a browser can detects it, so if you ask me i think its effective. this virus scanners might be underdeveloped to tackle modern threats but all they need is to detect a partial line of code in a malicious file to determine if its a threat or not.
