You should use SEOquake chrome extension. It will help you see a lot of metrics. You can see keyword and word count too.

I use Word Counter Pro and all I need is to highlight the body content, right-click on it, and it will give me the EXACT word count.
The issue with these other chrome extensions and even a powerful on-page optimization tool like SurferSEO is that they take into the words inside the top navigation menu, footer, sidebar widgets, body content widgets, comment section, customers reviews, etc., which sometimes skew the result a lot.
