Hey guys,

I am going thru and narrowing down my keywords to start using.....and I am wondering which route should I take and why...

People have mentioned searching for competition on particular keywords by using "phrase match" and also by SEOTC (or allintitle match) as far as determining competiton goes...

If I am looking for competitions of less than 10k should I got by the Phrase match results or the Allintitle results?

I am just thinking thru the process along this train of thought...If I find a keyword that has 500 allintitle results, 10k phrase match results and 100,000 broad match results....am I gonna be able to rank number 1 if someone searches that keyword using broad match? (even though I went by the allintitle results in choosing that keyword and assuming no other authority sites are present)

I am just thinking about how doing seo using allintitle and phrase matches correlates with when the average joe uses broad match to search for the same keyword (which IMHO very few peeps except marketers know how about phrase match in google)

Hope this make sense...

Any thoughts?

This is my advise, throw away all you know about "phrase match", "intitle", "allintitle", "Broad match"...etc For the most part it means nothing.

Your first step should be to download the free trial of market samurai, its the best keyword research tool I have personally ever used. And guess what? I used the trial for months and found amazing keywords. So if you don't have the money their is know need to buy it just yet.

Find a keyword that you like then examine the top 10 competitors and decide if you think you could outrank anyone of them. If you think you can go for it!

Market samurai does have a cool tool that lets you examine the top 10 in depth. But you only get it for 12 days (I think) with the trial or you have to buy it. But if you don't want to spend money just download "SEO for firefox".

Already got MS and im in the comparing process right now..hence the questions...

Got another question...if I was using a site like ezine articles...and if I am trying to determine a keyword to target wouldnt SEOTC (keyword in title results) be the most accurate since if I make an article on ezine and have those keywords in the article title wouldnt this also show up in google as the page title(ie SEOTC)?

Hi turboplug, maybe ur overcomplicating it? I'm not really sure I get ur question...

What I do, use MS and MNF... find something with seemingly low SOC or SEOC. Then just google the term and check out the top ten. If there's someone below PR2, maybe has low backlinks or whatever, you can probably overtake them. Am I making sense here?

waayyyyy overthinking, and you're still on the domain name ;)
Pick a domain with the most important keywords and move on, the domain name alone will not get you all the traffic. - Start overthinking about content and backlink strategies :)

If I find a keyword that has 500 allintitle results, 10k phrase match results and 100,000 broad match results....am I gonna be able to rank number 1 if someone searches that keyword using broad match?
- ranking #1 has nothing to do with the number of results - It's a matter of looking at who you can beat (as some have pointed out above) - don't worry about # of results - worry about who your competitors are.
MS is a little stronger at this - can you do better backlinking than the top 10 for your KW?
good luck!

Another trick that can help at times, do the google search in quotes. This can help you check competitveness also. But i guess the real thing is, don't get hung up, pick a niche that looks doable - and do!

Im done with the domain...right now im just narrowing down my keyword list from 1700 and Im trying to figure out which parameters I should use as the "get rid of it" parameters in terms of competition...10,000 broad match?, 10,000 Phrase match?, 10,000 all in title?.....any ideas where to set my parameters knowing I will be using ezine articles w/ backlinks as my ranking pages...what type of competition should I shoot for/not go above?

again, number of results for a keyword doesn't matter - you need to look at how many backlinks your competitors have, and the quality of those backlinks, for any given keyword.

You're thinking this through, which is good but you're going too far, especially since you're still figuring out a domain name.

Don't be afraid to jump in and take what you already know in with you. Experience is always the best teacher.

Make sure your keywords are in your domain name, but as was already stated above, allintitle results alone won't dictate weather or not you'll be able to get that number 1
Google spot.

As I had said I already got a domain...

Heres the dilemma...

See the thing that's causing this tug of war in my mind on this subject is that a lot of these keywords have big spreads in them...like some are 80k phrase match but only 300 allintitle match

And I am trying to figure out if I should go by the phrase or all in title to narrow these down? SinceI am putting the keyword in the title of the article (ie how it will show up in google) and I'm using ezine articles and the authority it has to rank in Google...

These type of phrase/allintitle broad competition spreads are causing a mental tug of war on deciding proper comp level to filter these keywords at and whether to use phrase match or all in title...any thoughts?

As said before, stop over-"noodling" it. Trust me, I am the worst and very guilty of over analyzing keyword results, to a true fault.

Every niche, and every keyword phrase you go after is an animal of itself, the only thing that matters is the top 10, period. Don't even care about the number of results.
