The Site

I've got a real german authority site running on Wordpress; a site that is older than ten years, has plenty of purely organic backlinks and ranks well for its content. With "real authority site" I mean it's a site people are referring to when they are looking for advice. And because of its age in that niche, it's even a small brand.

Some rough numbers from Majestic:
Trustflow: nearly 50
Linking Domains: 1200+ (including backlinks from Wikipedia)
(I don't want to give away the precise values, because I don't want the site to be identified.)

The are some problem though:
  1. It's focused on a very narrow niche, but that niche is getting less interesting. The domain name is directly addresses that narrow niche. So I've problems writing new and interesting content for the site.
  2. Some of the content is really old. With really old I mean it's been written more than ten years ago and is now completely outdated. This ironically applies to the content that's ranking the best.
  3. The content is purely informational and not suitable for Amazon nor for any other affiliate program. I have to monetize with Adsense and selling banner spots to companies in that niche.

The site get's about 200 daily visitors only, because there's nearly no new content on it. In the last twelve months, there has only a single post been published. Adsense revenues are about 15? per month.

The Goal

I want to revive that website and earn at least 1500?/month with Adsense and direct monetization within six months.

The Plan

Here's what I intend to do:
  • Rewrite most of the outdated content (mostly done)
  • Choose a broader niche for that site (done)
  • Reorganize the website (done)
  • Relaunch the website with a completely new domain (should happen in the next few days)
  • Hope that the relaunch doesn't cost to much rankings (fingers crossed)

The most essential part in this plan is to broaden the niche so that I can address more topics that are interesting to me and that offer more Adsense revenue.

The Learnings

I hope we all can learn something from this journey: How to revive an aging website? How to monetize an established but purely informational blog? And how to run a site that's not made for money making, but for offering the best possible content for its users and to make money nonetheless?

Yeah, you forgot to change text color, I can't see anything

Oops. I somehow must have changed the text color from default to black. As I'm using the bright color scheme with the gray background everything looked perfect to me.

I changed the text color back to default, it should be readable now. Please excuse that mistake.

Nice business plan - I like the way you put the plan on the paper. If you're focused, success is just a few steps ahead of you. Good luck

I think its very easy for old domain already have near 50 TF. Reputed members earning $500 a month by one fresh domain within 2 to 5 months. But its simple matter for you in my point. Good luck buddy.

I am on the same path... an old domain, informational posts + ads3nse. But what I am lacking is SEO. Mine is multi niche site and I am confused about SEO plan. I think your journey will focus some lights on that.

All the best.... following

Short Update

Working hard on my plan:
  • all of the outdated content is now rewritten
  • redirects are implemented (you can't imagine how many redirects I had to implement)
  • Twitter account started
  • FB ready to get renamed reflecting the new domain name

Will do the relaunch this weekend.

I cant't publish anything just for making money (like reviews) on this site as it is purely informational. And the site is in german, so it's more ambitious as it may seem. But it's nevertheless realistic.
