How does Google determine if an article is unique or not?

For example, how much of the article has to be different?

Thanks

Well if you have two pages with nearly identical content, then both with be indexed under similiar keywords.

My guess is that uniqueness is measured against the entire internet. So if a uniquness factor exists it will because the organization/content has unique combos that are not precedented.

How they compile and compress the data to measure for uniqueness is something I can only guess at. but I do not think this practice has anything to do with copyscape techniques.

As far as backlink generation goes, do you think two articles, if they are slightly different, will generate two different backlinks?

It depends. My experience is: the first few articles will give you a backlink, but if you mass submit, the majority won't be counted.

Hmm...I just don't know if that means a spinner is worth investing in, even if it's cheap... :/

i just make sure my articles pass copyscape and are at least over 60% unique.

There is a school of thougt that says when Google encounters duplicate content, the content with the most backlinks win and page gets the most authority in the eyes of Google.

Technology has gotten much more sophisticated; the old days of simple direct spinning won't work anymore like they once did.

Are spinning utilities still worthwhile? I think they are, but you now have to use them as one stage in a process instead of the whole process itself.

To get useful ideas on how better to spin&grin you might want to check out what the other side is thinking about detecting dup content, aka "web spam."

Enter the following search terms in google:

"google 'duplicate content' patent"

or

"detect 'web spam'"

you might want to look at wpunique its a plugin that is fairly cheap and has a spinning feature as well as a way to unique the content even if it is duplicated.
