I usually use Google's Keyword tool to find relevant keywords, then I do a search on Google for competing sites. Is it better to search Google for the keyword alone, or in quotes? Without quotes usually shows more competition, but I think some people search for products/services using the quotes.

What's your take on this? What about the best keyword research tools?

was wondering the same thing. thing is - without quotes means that every combination of those words would be used whereas with quotes means that searching that exact term only. if you want to try and rank for that exact phrase - for eg. "free nokia applications", you'd chuck it in quotes.

that's my understanding of it.

you can do that without quote but with +
example: Internet+marketing+guru for the exact phrase...
or you can combine both : "Internet+marketing+guru"
what do you think ??

with quotes is measuring how many pages in the web actually uses the keyword in that order. For me I'd rather use with quotes to measure competitors.

the "quotes" is for exact match in those terms.

yes it will give you a better indication for those KW's.

Searching by using "allintitle" along with your keyword phrase will show you who is actually using those words in their title of their web page. An example of the search syntax is as follows:

Let's say you wanted to know who was using the keyword phrase, "best book dog training" in the title of their web page. Of course knowing that information will give you an better indication of who your competitors are for that phrase.

You would type the following in Google:
Code:
allintitle:best book dog training

Hope that helps :)

Download market samurai from the downloads section on here. You can pump in hundreds of keywords at once then analyse them.

It returns the in qoutes results and in title results, along with lots of other useful info.
