I have a website which shows up for a particular keyword in google's page rank.

It was at the 4th location and had a 0 page rank for that particular search.

The website at the 1st location for that keyword's search had a page rank of 5.

Today after months of seo when I checked I was amazed to see that my website is at the top most location in google's search for that keyword although the page ranks haven't changed.

I am not sure what is happening, is this google dance or is this sign of a page rank update? Is it possible that bcoz the particular keyword is a part of my domain, google is choosing to display the website higher than a page rank 5 website?

I would realllllllyyyyy like to hear from you all.

Now I am seriously confused! So, serps is independent of page rank.

This has pretty much blown all my understanding of seo to pieces!

Frankly, if pagerank has nothing to do with serps then what is the purpose of page rank in the first place ?

Now I am sure that back links with anchor text works and anchor text defines the search criteria along the keywords contained in that particular page but..........................
Forgive me for sounding so dumb but if serp and page rank r 2 completely different things then what is the purpose of a page rank ? If page rank plays no role in SERPS then why does it even exist?
