Such a bad way to try save newspaper companies. Or news portals. Dont think it is possible to pay all news websites just for including them in search results. Super bad law probobly lobbied by Australian newspaper companies.

wanna know how stupid australia is?
yesterday: 42 degrees celsius(110fahrenheit)
yesterday: wild fires of over 20km(13miles)
today(less than 24hours): 25 degrees(77fahrenheit)
today: flash flooding
Australia is definitely a... unique country , even the weather is drunk

The underlying issue is really are google, youtube, facebook etc publishers? They maintain they are not and have managed to convince congress of that. As such it gets them out of lots of legal requirements, not just a free ride on payment for content.

I am from a newspaper background and believe that in reality they are publishers because they have editorial policies, just like every publisher and that brings legal responsibilities. At the moment they have the best of both worlds and that is why their profits are obscene. If they had to adhere to the rules every other publisher does profits would plummet.

Will be an interesting one to watch play out.

The Aussie government is f*cked. They are about to screw over thousands of small businesses and website owners by doing this, and they don't even care. All they care about is trying save Murdoch's media influence like the good little puppets they are. It would be good if Google just blocked these big news companies from google, or disabled the Google news section in Australia, and not punish website owners or non-news content creators. Surely, they could just have an opt-in for news websites that agree not to charge google for their content? That would allow the small guys to thrive and stick it to the Murdoch's of this world.

I don't know, Google results are definitely not perfect. Depending on the niche, I've tested duckduckgo and I get better results.

I doubt this will happen, but it would be an amazing live world experiment to see how a country works without Google. They'd obviously all flock to Bing/DuckDuckgo, that could have a profound domino effect on Google's world dominance!

I am not living there, but if I was, I would be able to live without it. But if I would have businesses relating to SEO within Google, that's another story! And yes, I see nothing bad to use VPN for Google. If the gov decided something, it doesn't mean that you need to accept it, especially that's something frivolous like this
