Here is how I clean up my BHW experience to cut down on clutter, distractions, and spam, and focus on the content of the threads and posts. This seemed like the most appropriate section to post this in:

  1. Scroll all the way to the bottom of this page. See the dropdown on the left side of the bottom sidebar? It likely says "Black and Gold Vb4". Change it to Black Light Vb4.
  2. Using whatever ad blocker you have installed, block the website logo in the top left corner.
  3. Go http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/profile.php?do=editoptions and do the following: Default Thread Subscription Mode through my Control Panel Only, Don't show New Private Message Notification Pop-up, Don't receive Email Notification of new Private Messages, Visitor Messaging off
  4. Untick Show Signatures and Show Avatars. This is a personal preference, but I much prefer clean layouts to flashing banners and 90% shitty BHW default avatars. No thanks.
  5. Set the Number of Posts to Show Per Page: Show 40 posts per page, and Hide User Customizations
  6. On that same page, there is a section called Forums To Exclude From View. Exclude the following by hitting Control and clicking: The Marketplace, Social Networking Sites, YouTube, Downloads, and Introductions. Obviously this is also personal preference, but since I'm not a seller, and my niches don't have to do with spamming Instagram, I keep them turned off.

This, to me, enhances the user experience tenfold, and cuts down on an incredible amount of spammy posts and stupid questions. YMMV.

Surely that makes a forum a bit sterile, i like the busy look and feel. There are only distractions if you let them, i have found other useful information by seeing other things on here. Nope i for one want to keep it busy and less sterile

Nobody wants an impotent website!

Seriously though - sometimes the clutter and spam posts are good for a chuckle or two.

Followed OPs instructions and got this:

I can see why someone would want to do some of the things you listed, although if most of the members here just blocked banners and specific section, we would most likely see an increase in spam across the forum. This is why I prefer to take a different approach to dealing with the spam on here by reporting it when I see it.

But hey, different strokes for different folks.
What I find interesting are the members who actually contribute to the forum are always actively looking for ways to improve it and telling the complainers to do the same.

It's always the same names too, who take the time to report the spam/scam/nonsense threads and help us keep the forum clean.

fyi - there's a large overlap between these groups. So it looks like those who give value, also get value in return. May be worth considering?
