A friend needs advice

So I have this friend, who decided to hack into her boyfriends ex girlfriends myspace account. Now she didnt do anything criminal, just looked around, looked at messages and all. She did this cause the ex was saying the guy was still messaging her and telling her all kinds of dumb shit. Anyway, all she did was delete the girls account, nothing big. But now the girl called myspace and blah blah. I dont think theres anything they can do for something non criminal, and what I told her is it would be too costly for myspace to track down the exact IP and all, directly back to her. From what I know, they can find the ISP, but would need to go through subpoenas and all to get the exact IP of my friend. She has Verizon DSL, so a dynamic IP. Am I correct and she has nothing to worry about?

Doubt myspace cares about that, not like she's doing it on a large scale.

Uh ... circumventing security and knowingly causing damage or loss is criminal.

Myspace already knows what IP caused the problem.

If your "friend" is in U.S.A. , the way they get the ISP to co-operate for the
delivery of the server logs (and thus the ISP account holder) is this:

"We want to know who did this, we'll give you until 12 noon 24 hours from now
to tell us ... and if you don't, your ENTIRE NETWORK ( IP Block) will be prevented
from accessing MySpace or any of it's affiliates"

The ISP interprets this as "Holy f**K, we are going to get a million calls an hour
from people who can't get to MySpace and we cannot handle that call volume,
then people will also cancel because they can no longer get MySpace, etc..."

Believe me, MySpace will have the account holder's name within 48 hours
and there will be charges.

myspace won't care about this. they will tell you to take care of your passwords in the future.

She can always claim the ex gave her the pass & asked her to delete the a/c - who's gonna verify? It's not illegal to go into a frnd's account on their req and delete it on their req....

Is she scared the ex is gonna find out?

Big deal... I really don't think myspace cares. She can even call up myspace and say she did it herself pretending to be the ex, pretend to be batshit crazy etc/... So many ways to play this

Myspace doesn't give a shit about your friend's account, trust me.

I fought a legitimate copyright dispute with them for months and never came to a resolution, so I highly doubt they are going to stop what they are doing to deal with a single, non-commercial complaint.

I've seen a similar situation like this occur. A guy hacked into someone's account and made a bunch of posts under their name to embarrass them and even uploaded pictures for added effect. The original owner told myspace and myspace closed the account. The guy never got in trouble for it.

phished myspace and facebook accounts are dumped by the thousands on *chan boards all the time and countless trolls log into them, make suicide threads, spam porn/gore or hit on everybody in the contact list and watch the hilarious drama unfold. there is no IP tracking or any effort made by either company outside of an auto-generated reply to reset your password should you email their account support. nothing will happen

unless money was being paid for the service (and it wasn't), they won't do anything because that's not how they make their money.

I had a similar worry recently when my daughter hacked a Facebook account to exact revenge (just posted some comments) and that was reported to them.
What did FB do?? Absolutely nothing!!
I only think they're really bothered when it is being done on a large scale such as by phishing etc

PS...I don't agree with hacking but I did tell my little girl that if she's planning to do it again, then at least tell me so that I can show her how to do it properly!!

na, myspace will be too busy to find ways on how they will earn more money. what they will get from meddling on this issue and file a law suit it can even cost them money at the end for nothing---

they will just close the account and blocked the IP address that's about it, pure and simple.
