Hello! I recently started studying UX design and I have some difficulties understanding the UX research phase.
  1. What are the questions you always ask your client when taking on their project?
  2. Let’s say I do a design for a food recipe website and I need to do some user research. How can I know what questions I need to ask? I mean are there any good templates that could help me have a basic structure?
  3. Once you have your questions, how do you get feedback from potential users (UX surveys)? What are the tools you use?
  4. Do you deliver personas, user flows, etc first, or by the end of the project?
I’ve been practicing UI design for a year now but I thought that I also need to have some basic UX knowledge too even though for now, I’m just a UI designer. I’ll be really happy if anyone replies to my beginner questions, thank you.

Generally, checking the biggest competitors in the market will show you what you need to have on your website (structure and content).

Also, for pain points, you can check social media and influencers in that particular niche.

When I started developing real estate investment app with my team, it begun with product description > wireframing and logically structuring the app > consulting the wireframe > showing it to other people > making some clickable version (could be website, could be e.g. Figma) > letting people try to click through > gaining feedback > repeat till we have enough data > preparing the developement part.

So it's good to get as much info about the product / service upfront and also understand the business behind it. UX is not just about website users but also about people in the backoffice working on it.

For that I love diagrams. Sit with the client and draw like little kids until I'm really sure what he wants. Then I can start wireframing.

As for the exact questions, here are some:

- Why user should use / buy your your product / service?
- What user needs to do in order to use your product / service?
- Whats the target group? (e.g. if the target are developers, you can design much more complex interfaces stuffed with features than when the target are old non techy people)

P.S. UX design and developement are overall not like walking straight but more like a rollercoaster ride. There will be changes along the way :)
