if it is owned by somoene else, what is the best way to purchase it?

how to make sure the transaction goes thru smoothly?

and what do i have to do with it once i get it if i am NOT ready to use it yet?

The best way is contacting the domain's owner, but I doubt if you will get desired domain. For example, I want to buy ibm.com and google.com, will I get those domains? NO. However, there is still a chance for you for unfamous domain, it depends on your negotiation with the owner.

If you don't have a plan already, don't waste your time by trying to get targeted domain (if owned by someone else).

Contact the guy.

"Hi, I would like to purchase xxxx.com from you, how much are you willing to sell it for?. Also where is it registered and give me any other details you may have."
"You can get it for $xxx, it is registered with name.com".
"Okay, let's do this through escrow".
"Okay".

*Sets up escrow transaction*

Payment sent, domain received.

You can just park it if you're not ready to use it.

Yup i agree with the above poster. Check the whois, get the owners email address and send him an email. If he wants to sell he will give you a price, if not, you aint gonna get it And a tip, mention that you are a domainer and not an end user, you might get the price down a bit

Use Escrow.com or EscrowDns.com for a secure transaction. EscrowDns pay to Paypal which is a big plus so i mostly use them..

As for parking it, Sedo, NameDrive, Parked if you get accepted....

if i park it, is that free?

Yep, parking it is free. If you have a good enough name which receives traffic you might even make a few bucks.
