A bot is being used to access your website through a Google keyword?

A few years ago, almost 10 years ago, there were bots you could use that simulated a Google search and then accessed your website (behind the scenes, it searched and navigated until it found your site in the rankings, then accessed it) and stayed for a while. The Google location (Google, Google Brazil, Google Chile...), keywords, and the time it would stay on your site after being accessed were all configurable.

The idea was that 'if you accessed the second page and clicked, it means that the link on the second page should be on the first page'.

Does this method make any difference today? In fact, did it make any difference 10 years ago? Was it effective or a waste of time?

That sounds like a classic CTR manipulation campaign. Someone is running a bot network to search a specific keyword, find your site in the SERPs, and click it to artificially inflate the click-through rate. If it's a competitor trying to mess with your bounce rate, you need to set your Cloudflare to 'Under Attack' mode or set up custom WAF rules to challenge IPs coming from unrecognized data centers. If it's your own SEO guy doing it, tell him to slow down before Google's algorithm catches the unnatural velocity.

It's CTR manipulation and it works well today, but of course it's now a much more difficult process than it was 10 years ago when you didn't have to go through the process of building up Google profiles and cookies. Back then a headless browser, some random pauses, and a load of proxies could move rankings. Now you need to look like a real user with history.

Personally I've used some in the past and saw positive results, but the ROI was just not there for me.
