I'm looking at buying a video CMS for my tube site, it supports most file types but not x265, I asked them how much it would cost to implement x265 support and they said it would take 35 hours and cost $875. The CMS only costs $199...

I asked why it would take so long + cost so much and they said

"Encoder should be integrated and all videos should be converted and encoded automatically

We have to integrate and automate"

Are they pulling my chain or is it really so time consuming? The software comes with the source code so its customizable, could a freelancer do it for less?

Most CMS developers make a decent chunk by marking up third party integrations.

If the CMS is open source, it shouldn't be difficult implementing x265.

Of course, I cannot say without looking at the files and the current integrations.

P. S - Why is this in the Journey Subforum?

Yeah thats what I was thinking, 35 hours sounds to enable an encoder doesnt sound right to me

Thats a good question, one I had difficulty answering myself, there are plenty of sections but I cant see anywhere that lets users post questions about things so I went with what I thought was the least wrong

Yeah I guess it could have gone in there too, but the OP is describing what i'm doing/planning to do in my current journey so I dont think its too out of place here. I think BHW is lacking a clearly defined section for questions similar to this tho

For everyone's reference, seeing as you are asking about additional programming for a website script or theme I'd say this is the most suitable section. Or general scripting chat would have done as well.

As for your question, customisations like this are always going to be expensive when you ask the developer - because they are not in the business of custom script building, they are in the business of selling a ready made script. So they don't NEED this work, hense why they might as well charge a high price and to them it doesn't matter if you say yes or no.

As others mentioned, if you post in hire a freelancer forum you might find someone that can customise it, or build something from scratch, cheaper.

Or there might be another script out there that already does the job you need.

Yeah I thought hat was the case with the prices, i've got my mind set on which CMS to use so i'll buy it and get a freelancer to customize it, cheers guys
