Planning on starting an authority site myself. Been working with small sites for a few years right now. It's entirely different animal to try to rank them. My model is going to be different, but wish I can learn something here.

I could see his Adsense account getting banned for something silly as it happens quite often. I'd imagine he could always use another network like Chitika or sell the ad space himself if his website is popular.

I have been hit with site wide penalties before. I have usually been able to overcome them within a few months.
As for adsense being banned, if that happens it will be unfortunate, but I do have a secondary advertising method in mind, that I hope to earn from too. It just may take longer to get to the 75k/year if that happens.
They are all related to eachother. All in the same niche, IE. your example of "cameras" the niche would be technology. Your example for shoes, the niche would be fashion. etc.

Here are some ideas to scale up to $300,000
Invest in paid traffic. Collect emails retarget and remarket.
Make commission not only from digital products but physical products if applicable in your space.
Get a feel for it and then once you have a wide enough customer base launch your own product.
Making money off of google adsense is cool but if they decide to shut down your traffic then what?
Take advantage while you can.
Remember Value = Wealth.
Provide not only article but tools or any of convenience to help make your users life easy.
