I recently signed up and client to find that their site takes 7 - 8 seconds to load. The good news is that their target keywords are relatively low competition... Should I still be able to rank the site with these types of load speeds? How much of an effect will it have?

PS: This isn't server side, its 100% because of how the website is built.

Moz has an article on this. See https://moz.com/blog/how-website-speed-actually-impacts-search-ranking.

TL;DR: The research has shown that page load speed does not have a significant effect, however the time until the first byte is transferred does.

Irregardless to SEO, there have been many studies that show a faster page load time has a significant effect on conversions.

If you want any help getting the load speed to be faster, shoot me a PM.

Ranking is not the only parameter when it comes to Search ranking. However if possible analyze which element consumes the most time for loading and see if it can be optimized.

You really should get that fixed because there's nothing to do with all that traffic if it doesn't convert because the site loads too damn slow.

The best practice is, the site should load below 3 seconds. You should work or optimize the site for more faster loading.
Because nowadays Google is more focused to improve or develop user experience issues.
March update was more on user experience issues rather than other algorithms issues.

So keep safe to Google, you have to make sure the website is loading fast.

what are your bounce rates? Because that could way up. Is it a old html site, those tend to load pretty fast actually

Won't affect SEO too much but bounce rates will likely be higher. Make sure the site is using compression, and if possible a CDN

Even if you rank 1st, what makes you think the viewer won't visit the 2nd site that will load faster?
Would you wait 8 seconds for a page to load? No offense. :)

Yes you can rank. Figure out why the site is taking so long. Tools like YSlow (http://yslow.org/) will help. Get some caching going or utilize a CDN. CloudFlare has one and I'm a big fan of Amazons Cloudfront as well.

Might want to reconsider if you're using a shared host to go to a VPS or dedicated so your speed will only be effected by your site.

Use dedicated resources and website performance optimized such as JS,HTML,CSS ,Code, Content etc for boost up site speed.Good load time Speed Actually Impacts Search Ranking

I have the same problem and a CDN did not help, isnt is so that google adsense ads slows down your site as well?
