It's known that Reddit traffic hardly converts. Most use adblock and they hate commercial websites.

Only if you get on the front page. And getting on the front page is really hard especially if you're selling something or aren't a well recognized brand

Last I knew not even Reddit made a profit from its own users.
EDIT: Look at the making money section here, the journeys section and the affiliates forum, you'll find tons of ideas there. Not specifically for Reddit though.

And reddit community will report/flag your post for all the annoying ads faster than a blink of an eye. Might not have been so crazy.
Those 600k users generated a big wave of social signals in a short amount of time. That's probably worth more than the immediate ad clicks he had.
OP may have gained some social boost and also may have gotten new links in the process. Who knows, maybe not all is lost.
And reddit community will report/flag your post for all the annoying ads faster than a blink of an eye. Please, do your homework first before suggesting
