I recently bought a 6 year old domain. What would be a safe rate of building links? I would like to rank for some god keywords fast

I would like to know this as well. I have a couple of 5 and 7 year old domains.

There's no "safe" limit when it comes to link building. Some say go with a few a day, and for others a few hundred a day works fine.
If the domain is 6 years old, then you should have no problem building 10-50 links per day.
Other factors come into play as well, such as what niche your in, had the domain been previously blacklisted, etc.

I agree with bobby, there's no proven safe rate. I've used xrumer to spam thousands of forums for backlinks. My site(s) never got sandboxed. Also keep in mind that if you submit your site to 100 directories or blogs a day, it doesn't necessarily mean that you will get 100 backlinks. Some will not be approved. I'd say that less than 50% will get you a backlink.
