As if we only must pay rent "these days."
50 years ago, rent was a lot cheaper, so your point about $100,000/year being not enough because you "have to pay rent," is irrelevant.
Your other point was that we pay taxes on the $100,000/yr!
As if that's some new law that now makes $100,000 something less than it used to be (before taxes).
And it's doubly irrelevant since, with the topic of this thread, we wouldn't be required to pay taxes on this income.
You can argue that point if you feel it's important.
The only point that would've been reasonable for you to make, which you failed to mention, is inflation. That would've at least made sense.
Inflation is the only reason (among all of your 2 reasons, rent and taxes),
why we might choose to rethink whether $100/year is something to be grateful for.
