Hey guys, question. We have new site (travel niche) with 50 posts published since the end of February. These are all between 2000-3000 words. One page has been optimized, but not over-optimized. To date, we have essentially 2 pages ranking for 5 keywords.

The thing that got me thinking today...we published a post on Thursday of last week that is already in the top 40, while posts we made in early March aren't even in the top 100.

Thoughts? Are the keywords we chose for the other posts just too competitive for our "new" website?

(we may just need some links, we have few if any)

Check moniterbacklinks to see if you have any links to those posts.

This is pretty common, since it's a new site, I would continue doing what you do, target some lower KD keywords and try to rank other pages, then start link building internally, work on on-page, you'll be golden.

Target low competition keyword and build high authority backlinks

Yes, keyword competition is the main factor. Also, compare the onpage of both articles and check for the keyword density in both articles. Also, check whether your ranking article got some backlinks or social shares.
