I wondered how that was done. Drupal uses this I think. This is more seo friendly for ? urls.

Yes that will be SEO friendly.
As per my knowledge, it will help in better indexing of websites.

Recommended for further reading:
mod_rewrite, 301 redirects, and optimizing Apache.
