Researchers from Japan have developed the world's first 16 layer dvd with 25GB per layer for a total of 400GB a dvd. Thinking of trading that DVD player in for blue-ray? Might as well not.

The question is, Would you consider backing up information of these?
Think about it if you had a 400GB worth of movies of songs on one disk and then it was scratched. I would be beyond mad.

wow that is incredible bet we wont see that for a long time. They will start at 50gigs and work ther eway up to 400gigs upgrading each year to make that extra cash. you know how it goes, just like precessor speeds
 
Do you think our current DVD players can read all those layers without upgrading them or is this a stupid question :p?

i highly doubt current dvd players can read that many layers. the reading is going to be based on the laser in teh dvd player (it reads divots in the disk which encode teh data more or less, to simplify the process..) and the laser in your player is most likely designed to be strong enough to read 1 or 2 layers (dual layer dvd's are common) but i doubt its programmed to have 16 "strength settings" which would enable it to read each layer. the laser iself might be capable but the player isn't necessarily programmed to adjust itself according to the disk. that being said it's not like that part is overly complicated.

not sure if my explanation made sense. i could be wrong, too.
 
Blue-ray disks already support 50 GB. You can buy them now.

wow.. But yeah, I would use them for back up, I would just make multiple backup copies. that is when this discs are affordable.
 
i remember how expensive dual layer dvds were when they first hit and they are still priced a lil high to me for the quantity you get. 16 layer dvd's will surely cost a shitload. sounds good, but whos going to want to pay high prices for them.
 
Optical media is the pits !!! (geddit)

Solid state is wayy better. That said, I think there will be some benefit in holographic media, I recall somebody that was working on holographic based media that could hold terabytes of data on each disc.
