It really depends what you intend to use it for and depends on the provider as well. The traffic between user and proxy server isn't usually encrypted either, so you'd need to compliment it with additional measures.

Agree with him.
You have to trust the vendor at least because they can monitor your traffic. However you can follow other measures to make it secure dnscrypt etc.
