I make extreme sport videos and I've noticed 4:3 looks better than 16:9

Is there any downside to using 4:3? Will YouTube prioritise it less than a 16:9 video, or does it not matter?

Thanks

I don't think it works that way.

I think what really matters is if people watch your video for a really long time and they click on the thumbnail. Watch time and retention are all that YouTube really cares about.

Youtube cares for resolution indeed, why don't you render it in 16:9 with black bars on the sides

*I believe resolution matters as once I streamed in 4:3 and they prompt me a message saying something like "Your resolution is not optimal, please follow the following guidelines https://randomyoutubelink.com"

I don't think it will prioritise it less than a 16:9 video. It just depends on the user experience. If your audience likes how it looks and the quality is good then it doesn't matter.

Why not future proof your videos to the best aspect ratio and resolution? I've been upscaling to 4k for years and if no one else in your niche is doing it then it definitely won't hurt...
