Wordpress has been bugging me to update my PHP to at least 7.4. My site was using 7.3 before so to get rid of the notification I updated it. The next day I noticed my visitors increased up to 3x and after a week the traffic still hasn't gone down. Was it because my site is now faster? Going to try this next week on my other site.

interesting... I did hear this exact same thing (last year I believe) but I thought it to be bogus, but you're the 2nd person to mention it, so I'm not sure anymore :)

Do let us know how your other sites perform after the update!

That’s great, I’m still going with PHP 7.1
Let’s see how it goes!

Unless your site was VERY slow before and updating to 7.4 made it super fast (which seems unlikely), i dont see how it’d make google rank you to get 3x the visitors bases on site speed.. feel like you just happened to rank higher on one or multiple keywords at about the same time you updated it

What's the source of the traffic? Organic? Did it come from search, discovery?

Revert the change to find out. :) I use PHP 8.1 or higher. Why would you use 7? That's so old.

PHP 8.1 is clear winner and has faster loading time .
8.1>8.0 > 7.4 > 7.3 >7.2 > 7.1 > 7.0 > 5.6.1

I run Custom CMS sites with php8.1.
Google Ranking was Superfast .

Compared to 7.4 or older .
8.1 comes with a lots of deprecations and improvements .

Maybe switch from WordPress to laravel swoole and use latest versions of everything. :D

I believe there are many laravel CMS optimized for SEO that you can use and will do better than WP.

google places website speed as a great factor. likely upgrading has impacted speed and raised you in the serps.
i just pulled up a blog post stating its a 50% performance increase in 7.3 vs 7.4 so i can see the correlation there.
either way congrats on the free traffic boost. always best practice to keep things up to date.

Laravel is a good choice. Even though the script update from 7.1 to 7.4 took my sites down for a week , it still hurts to not be able to update entire modules to php8 or higher. Better move to WP or custom CMS.

Seems like a coincidence, no way Google processes your speed increase within a day unless you have a ton of traffic. Even then it's unlikely.

This is one of the most important question here. Else, there's no reason why traffic could spike like that.

Wow, dude not 10%, not 50%, straight up 300%! I want that now

I concur. Huge speed gains after updating to PHP 7 2 years ago or so and now to PHP 8. It's blazing fast.

PHP-FPM + new nginx. that's the combo.
