301ing dropped domains

Hey anyone with much experience of the effectiveness of this? Is all equity lost when the domain is dropped?

Just to be clear about what I'm talking about:

a domain has some really nice links pointing at it, major news sites etc, and it's dropped.

Register it

301 it to your root domain

Will it pass any equity on?

I thought about doing this because I thought that even temporarily, even a small amount of the traffic that would of gone there, SHOULD go to you? If your site is relevant to the redirect dropped site, they may even just accept it as the new site and stay.

301 transmit about 70% link juice. So you will rank (a little lower) on some keywords the dropped domain was ranking before.

Yeah no doubt about the traffic, that'll pass on no problems

Yes, the linkjuice will pass but if it's an unrelated domain you won't rank.

I mean, the dropped domain will reappear on the same keywords ONLY if you put the same content. Sure if it was ranking on "real estate (for example), and you the keyword "real estate" is not in the new content, you won't rank anymore.

I use them mostly for the traffic but have not noticed that much link juice being passed.

register them and 301 them to your money site or buffer sites

it wont help in most case but give it a shot .. You never know what works for you in SEO

The dropped part is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is it the domain was deindexed. If it gets deindexed it loses all the link juice pointing to it. Doesn't matter if you get it re-indexed with new content or whatever. Doesn't work that way. If it's been indexed the whole time, then yes the link juice will flow through the 301. And whoever said it won't help you if the anchor texts aren't related to your niche is totally wrong. The link juice won't be as relevant, but will still pass juice guaranteed.

People forget to renew their domain all the time. No harm no foul, as long as it isn't dropped so long that the links fall away.

It has happened to one of my site before, I got a dropped domain and all the link juice came back with it.

I think you can use the expired domain for link diversification. If it is related to you niche or keyword then it might rank you for other keywords or long tail keywords.

Yes it does work. The hard part is finding decent expired domains only.I did it and got some success.
