I know the topic of 301 redirects is one that is highly debated. My site is an e-commerce business site that I plan on being long-term and I'm wondering how risky it will be to do 301 re-directs to it. The expired domains I will be using will be one's used in the exact same niche with all niche links. For example, some of them may be an expired site for a certain product I sell and then the 301 points directly to that specific product page on my site or they may be other e-commerce stores (same type as mine) that went out of business & in that case will re-direct to my homepage.

I know that 301's are normally considered blackhat but I would assume doing it this way would not be risky for my site. I'd think that many times a big business would buy up other smaller sites/business and in that case need to 301 them to their site which would make it perfectly natural. If this case, I'd also think that it then wouldn't matter how many redirects you have to your main site (I've read many people say the more you have, the more "dangerous" it).

I'd love for someone who has extensive knowledge or previous experience with this to share their opinion & shed some light. I would like to do this but certainly don't need to if it's going to be risky for my site.

    Hey OP!

Using 301 redirects is absolutely OKAY and suggested by Google themselves for various scenarios where a company is usually re-branding and needs to switch over to a new domain. Below are just a few pointers on how 301 redirects work and should be set up for best results!

    1. To being, 301 redirects pass on about 70-90% of their PR and rankings to their new domain. You can set up the 301 redirect either via your htaccess file or your hosting provider.

    2. Now since redirects pass on their rankings, you should strive to ensure that the new domain is optimized perfectly and has similar content and meta titles that match up with the old domain. This way everything looks natural and organic!

    3. Final word- Penalties can also be passed through redirects however they may takes weeks, months or even longer for the penalty to finally be passed onto the new domain. Therefore always ensure that the 301 domain is clean and penalty free before redirecting to your new money site! [IMG]

You beat me to it; you said everything I was going to say. :)

OP, your strategy sounds fine to me, especially since the old domains also have the potential to bring in related traffic in addition to their SEO benefits.

You should be fine if you get good domains with clean backlink profiles.
