Hi all, I've never tried 301 redirects. I have a site that's ranking really well and I want to experiment with 301 redirects. Will setting one up on that domain affect the SEO of the site?

Dont do it. redirects should be used only for legitimate site moves or for blasting spam to. If the site your are redirecting has a penalty, it may pass on to your money site over time (could be weeks, could be months)

If you are using a fresh domain and building natural looking backlinks to it then its a little pointless as you could just build them to your money site

If the site is ranking well don't go for the option of 301 redirect ....!

Sure, it is pretty easy to set up a redirect with a simple ROR script

301 re-direction is the permanent re-direction if the page contain Errors or duplicate page like canonical issues. We use to do 301 re-direction BTW you are saying about keyword is ranking well. Why should you want to try 301 re-direction stuff ?. Any way if you want then go a head with this idea.

If you have home page URL structure and normal URL both are same. Google will consider this URLs are different page with same content (Canonical Issue). Do this needful and see the result

    All the best :)

Blast spam to your 301's that redirect to your site for short term rankings
