Hi all. I hope someone can help.

I am in the process of moving an old site across to Wordpress and need some advice on redirections. I get the basic redirection stuff for the main pages... however the query I have relates to the way this site was set up previously.

It had static html/php pages which are redirected across fine, but also a BlogEngine blog hosted on the same domain. This blog was hardly ever used and to be honest, what little content in the blog section can be scrapped.

However I'd like to direct any visitors who do turn up at the blog to the main domain on the new site. (So from from the old subdirectory blog (www.domain/blog/) to the main domain).

So the question is as to whether there is an easy way to do this with one simple 'catch all' redirect?

Make a post notifying visitors about the change and that you'll be posting your content elsewhere is a really good start. Not sure if it's a good idea to scrap all of the content that brought visitors to your site in the first place, unless it's something you really want to do, then go for it.

    Ramarma,

I am going out on a limb with this one, so maybe more qualified people can respond, but I think you can find what you are looking from this squidoo post on 301 redirects. After reading it, I think it should solve for the problem you are looking for in redirecting an entire folder to a new location.

If it works, please let me know and if I blow up your site, please blame it on Winston_Smith . ;)

I really do hope it helps!

    Shawn

put a .htaccess in a subfolder and it contents will be:
    Code:
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteRule ^/?$ "http\:\/\/www\.domainname\.com" [R=301,L]

It will just redirect to the main domain or whatever domain you put in there.

Yes, I will happily take the blame! I enjoy it being my fault. XD

Best wishes to your blog changeover and such. =]

Thanks very much guys. Took a look at the Squidoo lens and was able to sort this out in about 30 seconds!
