One of our main money sites had a bunch of page 1 rankings for a few keywords for about 1.5 months and has been indexed for about 6 months. It recently was hit with a Google sandbox and dropped 200-300 rankings for just about every keyword. We were wondering if it would be advisable to 301 redirect our sandboxed domain to a aged domain that has been indexed for awhile and then start our backlink efforts on that aged domain. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks

Why don't you sit on the sandboxed domain and start building links to your aged domain, that way you will have two ranking sites. When the aged domain (if) gets sandboxed, then the other one will probably come out.. happy little cycle

Yes, I have 301'd about a dozen penalized site over the last 3 years. Usually works fine.
The linkjuice carries to target domain. Sometimes, the rankings transfer to the target domain, sometimes they lose a little rank, sometimes a lot.
I've never had the penalty transfer over. But, if the site is de-indexed, it doesn't seem to carry the linkjuice over to target domain.
Results are better when you 301 each page from old to same url on target domain, rather than all pages pointing to root of target domain.

301 transfers the link juice and ranking to a new domain. so transfering a sanboxed, badly ranked or no pr domain to another domain will transfer the sandbox, the positions etc to the new domain. dont do it.
wait it out. sounds like you have an overoptimizing penalty going on which happens when you stuff keywords, link to bad neighborhoods or fail to rotate your anchor text in your link building.

Had to do this on a few domains myself.
Here's a bit of info on both:
Google penalized both domains and the traffic was cut by 80% within days. (On page content and dups being the culprit)
Over 50K pages indexed on both and ranked PR3.
Ended up ditching both and combining the content (spun) on a new domain and redirecting both at a later date. Decided to test out the 301 juice by pointing both for 2-3 days then removing. When both were pointed the new receiving domain ranked as well as the others (give or take), when removed it fell back to down to its normal ranking.
