301 redirecting 404 pages?

Has anybody had good results with redirecting all 404 pages to the homepage?

I have doing that on my sites for a pretty long time and I don't know if it's negatively effecting my rankings or not..

What do you guys think?

well, i don't know statistics but i don't think it would hurt. i know there are wordpress plugins that do this.
