301 Redirect Will Penalty a Site?

I found an expired domain with good backlinks but the domain has been hit by Google's penalty hammer. If I use that domain and 301 redirect it to my site, will Google also banhammer my site?

This expired domain has backlinks from Wikipedia, Gizmodo, CNN, BBC, and some few .edu links. I think it will be valuable for 301 but unsure if it is safe since the domain has been penalized by google.

No such technique is safe. It's your call to take, it has got upside and the risk.
I have seen many people raking new domain with 301 redirects..

Yeah. My other site is also ranking with the help of 301 but I am using a non-penalized domain. But this time, this expired domain is penalized but the backlinks are really good. Hope other members can give their opinion or experience on this matter.
 
Instead I would build upon that domain, the penalties will sooner or later expire, redirecting it could be risky
 
how do you know it's penalised?
 
Redirects are still something that can work but I would be careful, google became a lot smarter today and some people had their domain penalised here last year after an update.
 
I recommand you guys to use it carefully.

You could make a test with a site you don’t care about, redirect to that site, see how it goes.
 
I connected several expired domains to my website about a year ago. All the metrics went up within around a month after the redirection. But overall, I wouldn't say it skyrockets the performance of my website. A little boost was noticeable though.
 
Is it worth if it’s penalised? It should get way less traffic, so what’s the point?
 
Don't take this risk, this can harm your site, go for other open options why do you want to risk your site this way.
