Hello All,

I'm new to 301 Redirect and had a question. If I purchase a new or used domain, do I need to create a website for it before I can 301 Redirect it to another site?

As an example, if I purchase a used domain and wants to pass the link juice to a different site would I need to create a website for that used domain before I do the 301 Redirect?

Thank you ahead of time.

No you don't need to do anything but redirect it unless you plan on using a script code which I don't think you wanna go that route judging from your question.

Nope, and most domain providers have the option to 301 redirect easily accessible from your domain management panel. You also do not need hosting on the domain you are redirecting

No, i used GoDaddy for this process and they automatically filled in the Name-servers, and everything to make it compatible...

As the other replies have said - you can do a 301 at the name server level, which means no hosting is required.

I think he is talking about using a 301 redirect method to rank and bank. I am pretty sure you'll need a website on it, get it indexed and then 301 it, then 301 to the money.

Hi Jeff. I have read about two strategies I would like to use the 301 redirect for. The first was the one I mentioned above where I purchase a old domain and 301 redirect it to the site I want to rank to get the link juice.

The second method I read about is to purchase a new domain, send a large amount of links and social signals to the new domain then 301 redirect the new domain to the actual site I would like to rank for.

Would I need to build a website for the domain that is being 301 redirected in either of those cases? If not does it need to be hosted? If anyone else could chime in I would appreciate it as well.

Yes I am. If I'm going to 301 redirect a new domain I just purchased should I build content on it first and let it get indexed and then 301 redirect?

I personally just 301 redirect and start link building.
