301 redirect expired domain

hello guys , i saw a competitor of mine , doing 301 to main site , from expired domain , even the expired domain totally has different niche to the main site , and his traffic is going sky high ( his main site RD about close to 400 and half of them from 301 and lots of ahref DR 80 - 96 ). i checked his 301 site on archive , and it has many shots but i think not too spammy , but it was 301 to other site previously , is this a common thing for a high metrics expired domain gets 301 history ? will it still passing juice to new main site if it was 301 many times before ? or that guy purpose solely getting the high authority backlinks ?

Im planning doing the same like he did , but dont know the step to do it , lets say i checked those domains imma buy from metrics , live backlinks checks , RD too , then should i 301 directly after i purchase the expired domain ? or should i warm up the domain first ?

I don't know about the specifics exactly but I have seen 301's work when they are niche related and non-niche related. In my own experience I have only 301'd domains that I have had for a little while. I kind of just did it and didn't put too much thought into it beyond checking out the domain I was going to 301 and how to set up the redirect properly. But I am by no means an authority on the subject so take what I say with a grain of salt.

You'll need to ensure that your expired domains have the link juice/power. Eg, having links from very high authority sites like cnn, news sites, engadget, those type of very high authority sites. Then doing a 301 on the expired domain to your site, is akin having a direct link from them, back to yours, which would gradually increase your domain authority over time.
