Nearly all my sites got wiped out thanks to Penguin. One of them was a 10 page niche adsense site which was one of best earners which disappeared to about page 15 of google. I've 301'd this domain and have got my rankings back (at the moment).

The original site was highly optimized with the EasyWPSEO plugin - kw density 5-6%, kw in H1, H2, H3, alt tags, underlined, bold, italics. The main kw of each page was also the menu label of each page.

The first thing I did was to de-optimize the site bringing the kw density down to 2%, removing some H1,H2,H3 tags and the underlined, bold, italics.

I also took the kw out of the menu label to make the list of pages in the sidebar look more natural. For example bluewidgets.com- changed the menu labels from where to where buy bluewidgets to where to buy it etc. It made the site look more natural because if you're on a bluewidget site you don't need to have bluewidget on all the menu labels.

Next I got a new domain name from Godaddy. I took this opportunity to go change the main page of the site and decided to make one of the inner pages of the site my main page (because it had more exact searches). I got a .com with the kw of that page in it and then cloned the site, changed the inner page that I was targeting to the main page, quickly edited the header image to reflect the new name of the site and then started doing the 301s.

I 301'd each URL to the new URLs on the new site using .htaccess.

I then built a good quality squidoo lense and hubpage pointing at the new site and then blasted them using Zenno (link wheels, bookmarks and guestbooks). Also did a small web 2.0 link wheel linking the lens and hub with the new site. That probably hasn't has any effect yet as I haven't pinged it or blasted it.

This was on the 26th and I started getting traffic back the next day and it's been growing since. Yesterday was 95% of the adsense earnings that I would expect from it on a Sunday. The interesting thing is that a lot of the inner pages are ranking higher than they were at the moment (one is 5th for a 49k exact search).

Shit is still bouncing and all of this may go to shit tomorrow. The last thing I wanted to do was start some dumbass thread about 'THIS IS HOW TO BEAT PENGUIN' because all the SERPS are up in the air and nothing is permanent at the moment.

All I'm saying is this is what I did and my site has been reborn (at the moment)!

Great insights, thanks for that! I've had the same problem: got hit by the Pinguin. I've been playing with the thought for a while now whether I should wait and be patient like many people advise or simply redirect immediately. On the one hand, my website had a well-established brand name and I would preper to not 301 it. However, I don't know if the ranks will ever come back. On the other hand, it is said that 301s word miracles at the minute. The question is: for how long?

Me, too. I'd rather allow it to settle for few more days. It's unstable still at the moment and I've seen some good indications in the movement in the SERPs. Although, I haven't seen a lot of my keywords back, but I've seen an increase in traffic, probably I rank on some other long-tail keywords which I do not know and not even optimized.

There's a feature in Cpanel for redirects or you can check out http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirection

My link profile looked pretty spammy so I was fairly sure there was no way back for this site. I can understand people waiting for their SERPS to come back, but I was pretty sure my site was a gonna!

OMG - you were at 5-6%??? I felt slimy when my density went above 2% - it felt 100% unnatural. I've kept mine at 1.5%, give or take and was completely passed over by the penguin... in fact, some of my sites went up. None of them are making big bucks yet, but some are starting to gain in position and traffic. ;)

Yep, 301s are really working wonders right now, lol. I was back on page 1 one for another domain in less than 24 hours :D

Keyword density is relative to the overall quality of the article. A 2% density may be high for a gibberish article while a 5% density is fine for a technical analysis article.

Same here, I am waiting this out. I have no intentions on changing what was working and everything goes back to normal in a few weeks. I had read somewhere (might be here) that google had claimed they was having problems with their algo. We have seen evidence of this by seeing empty crap sites ranking. A couple of days ago, I took down all my blog roll links from my sites a lot of which where reciprocal links and I have noticed a good number of my pages and keywords coming back. I do not know if it has anything to do with my blog roll or things just evening out.

Good for you. I'd say that 99% of this had to do with the 301. You are far from the only one that has seen this work. I am in no way saying it's a permanent solution (a little irony there given that a 301 is supposed to be perm..haha), but it is definitely working well at the moment.

    Take it easy,
    Con

On another note, my experience with redirecting penalized sites is that the new site enjoys a short boost before the penalty is carried over to that domain. Please keep us updated to your results. With each zoo animal Google releases from their cage, the rules of the game change significantly.

I use 'Easy WP SEO' - one time cost of $37... I'm not an affiliate so just google it if you want it. IMO, it's a great product - works for all my domains and reports on the entire page, not just the post portion.

**Edit** Will be watching the thread for long-term effects of the 301... will the new site continue to rank better or not?

How short of a boost are you talking about? And you're talking since the 24th that you redir'd, new site ranked, and then tanked?

    Thanks for feedback.

My subdomain (blog) is ranking better than the main domain at the minute. I haven't seen my main domain in SERPs for a while now... :) Although I've never used xrumer or senuke for my site before I got hit for being a BMR-member. Every article I submitted with them was unique but it didn't matter to Google. I'll wait and see. Even if I'm not earning any money at the minute I'll not use AdWords. They can kiss my... hand :)

To get the ranks back I'm submitting very unique articles to article directories, web 2.0 and my own blogs and blast them. I do NOT blast my money site. I'll keep you updated. It's gonna be a nice case study :)

really nice insights to this, thanks. On a side note, very roughly what's 95% of you Adsense earnings, and also very rough traffic levels? Curious to understand if it's a "large" authority site.
