Hi,

can a 301 redirect of a SINGLE URL can be harmful for the rankings of the other kws/urls on this site?

Thanks!

Parasitus84,

Great question here. It would depend on what you are redirecting from. The 301 is code for a permenant redirect so any authority (and penalties) are passed on to the URL being redirected to. So in essence if you are redirecting a "dirty" URL to one that is "clean", then it could be harmful. All those things being equal though, no it shouldn't be harmful.

You also want to promote a good user experience. If you are redirecting a URL who's content and rich snippet in search has nothing to do with the new URL, then it could be harmful from a user standpoint. So someone would land on a page that they were not expecting and may leave.

In general they are not harmful if used correctly.

Here is more info on them,

Hope that answers your question,

It completely depends upon what you are redirecting.. If you are redirecting a healthy URL then nothing to bother with it
