What has Wikipedia to say about Search Engine Optimization?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via ?natural? or un-paid (?organic? or ?algorithmic?) search results as opposed to search engine marketing (SEM) which deals with paid inclusion.

Forget this complicated terminology. In simple terms, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a process on enhancing your site?s position in search engines.

There are a few SEO techniques that might just effect your website. It can harm your website very bad and it can even get banned from Google.

I'll summarize it in a short post.

1. Don't stuff keywords in the META tags.

2. Include the keywords in your URL(permalink) and Title.

3. No spamming of backlinks.

I agree with 1 and 2, but everyone that knows SEO should know about that already. It's too basic.

As for 3, I had to disagree. Google does not index all the spammed backlinks overnight. I know there are people out there that suggests that spamming backlinks to a site can cause it to deindex, I still believe otherwise.

^^Thanks.

Yes, google doen't index all backlinks overnight, but if you spam popular and "trusted" sites too much, then your site can be deindexed!

#1 has no bearing. Stuff all you want it won't mater to google, they don't care about meta tag stuffing because they don't even use keywords.

#3 yea and no. spamming links will get people to hate you but more links = chance at more traffic = more links google will see. Spamming can just get you in trouble but it doesn't hurt your serps unless you end up in some pages that are bad neighborhoods and even than its' debated on whether having a link there could get you in trouble (assuming you don't link back to a bad neighborhood).

I don't think that having too many backlinks on 1 site can be interpreted as spamming.

hmm.. I have all the 3 points in my sites. Never experience banned or deindex or hurt in SERP. Just google dance sometimes and that's all. The ranking will come back in few days and better. Don't be too worry or over excited about those "guru's SEO rules".

Would it be a good idea NOT to use any meta keyword after all ? Maybe it's like the use of nofollow, somehow it tells google that you are into seo and then google put a bit less value to your site ? Just a though, maybe I'll experiment this ...

Well, look at this post then!

At least for Google's web search results currently (September 2009), the answer is no. Google doesn't use the "keywords" meta tag in our web search ranking. This video explains more, or see the questions below.
