[2023 Journey] to $10,000/ month Selling Digital Products on ETSY

Quick update because it might help someone in the same boat.

I contacted etsy about the $1 ad limit and they got back to me quickly with a generic reply explaining they can't do anything manually about it. HOWEVER, my limit is $25 a day now. It's been only a few days since starting ads.

I plan to increase to $5 a day, still keeping to the same strategy to identify the best converting listings to see what works.
actually they increase your limit automatically if you spend the said limit within a day. e.g if you spend the entire $25 within a day, the system will increase your limit to $50 and so forth.

Update:
Everything was going well, sales starting to come in and getting valuable data from Etsy ads. If anything I got my proof of concept, and it would have been ready to scale next month.

BUT my account got permanently suspended today. I haven't broken any of their terms from my knowledge as I got my account banned many years ago before and wouldn't be stupid enough to get another account banned. I did however find a spelling mistake on my name for the payment details, which might have triggered a bot. As I only started the payment account verification process a day before.

I already made an appeal but know it will be weeks until a human checks my case.

Full disclosure:
- My products did not infringe copyright
- I used white hat SEO tricks up to this point

Current thoughts:
Even if my account is reinstated I think this suspension will delay progress by several months. The original goal is to reach 10,000 per month in net profit using Etsy, but this is no longer looking possible. So I'm going to leave Etsy for the time being and just hope Etsy reinstates my account within a month. In the mean time I'll start something else outside of etsy.

They will get your account back if nothing is wrong. if you have a banned account and you created a new one with the same info even the name only i think its gone for good. try to find chat link and chat with support.
if you can login its a good sign and chat with the account logged in. if not. i think its gone.

Thanks for the tip. I can login and they still let me change details and make an appeal using the form. I can't find chat support though, just support tickets. Just gotta do something else while waiting.

New Update:
Etsy just reopened my store and gave me some bull crap reply of saying some shops get caught up in their internal trust and security stuff.

They pushed my etsy ad spend back to $1 as well.

But at least I have my shop back.

This is encouraging. Congratulations mate!

Your journey can be a source of inspiration for many. These sudden setbacks are real challenges. All the hardwork is gone in a whisker! But I think if we have done nothing wrong then we should not worry.

I would like to see how you make a strong comeback now.

What are your thought on this journey? Will you continue it?

First time posting something like this online. Thought it would be a good way to track my progress while staying motivated from all the others on BHW making gains on their own journey, as well as learn from others who might want to point me in the right direction if you see me doing something stupid.

Goal: Get a monthly average of $10,000/ month in NET profit from selling digital products on Etsy by end of 2023.

Why Etsy: A marketplace makes selling a product easier because of existing traffic. Etsy is smaller than the other mainstream marketplaces such as amazon and ebay. The fees are lower and etsy customers are less price sensitive.

The plan: 10k on etsy in net profit is not easy to do in 1 year. It is also not easy to do with one shop. My plan is to start with the easiest product first and build it until I reach a plateau in sales where I would need a significant spend increase in ads to drive more sales before moving onto a second shop.

What I've done so far
January:
- Market research and found a few digital products with potential
- Decided on a product to start with for the first store
- Competition research on the current market leaders for my product on etsy
- Created an initial forecasting for costs, expected revenue & profit according to my budget
- Locked in a store name for etsy, instagram, Pinterest and gmail
February:
- Figured out production process
- Mapped out competition traffic sources
- Signed up for all necessary software/ services
- Figure out external traffic strategy
March:
- Uploaded listings to shop
- Started etsy ads (etsy capped me at $1 daily spend, not sure how to increase it)
- Study etsy SEO best practices
- Starting instagram account

Sales so far: 0
what tools did you use for market research?

what tools did you use for market research?
I used all free tools, didn't want to commit to any subscription tool service or any sort of paid fiver gig.

But most importantly, I personally think if you can't find a product to sell using your own research skills then that product might not actually be a good option to start investing time and money in. (The product im selling right now, is something I didn't even know had a market for)

Alright, it's time for an update.

It's been a rollercoaster ride, but to give you an overview of what's happened so far.

Last update was that the 1st store account was reactivated. While it was deactivated by Etsy, I went ahead and started a 2nd store with different credentials. I set up the 2nd store to sell the same products thinking the first one is a goner. BUT store 2 also ran into etsy auto bans, and it took forever to get it back again.

Once the 1st store was reopened, I found myself having to fast track my original plan of having multiple stores in different niches. I found a suitable product for store 2, and got to work on setting it up, while store 1 is getting a steady amount of sales every few days and got some reviews.

Store 1 already has a system in place, and it's working well, all that's left is tweaking the SEO and giving the algorithm time to get results. It's still early June, so cashing in on the holiday season shouldn't be a problem.

Store 2 is in a different niche with different needs, and although the store is up, the system is still in the works.

My cash outflow is still more than my inflow, but everything is still within my predictions. The goal isn't to get to profit, but to push the numbers for now.

What's happening right now:

- Starting a third store, because after using almost 2 months just dealing with Etsy's trust and safety team, I need to speed things up to have a chance of reaching 10k/pm. (I already know store bans are just part of the process and you should give yourself a month to be able to get it back)
- Make store 2 into a well oil machine, with reviews and steady sales ready for holiday season rush.

That's it. The rest is working my ass off.

I'll update again in a few months when there's something significant enough to update on.

Looks like you can start to plan early for a day job too. Like working Mac donald / Pizza restaurant. Online selling might not be suitable for you.

If you could tell me what tools you use for it, I would be quite impressed by your journey. and provide us with additional information will be greatly appreciated. But in all honesty, that is my real motivation. Good luck, buddy!

Can you please share what they asked you to provide after the auto ban, and what did you do to get it resolved ?
Thank you and good luck.

A whole list of things, but also address proof, ID proof, bank proof and they don't give you the list in one go, they make you jump through one hurdle after another, hence how long it took. I didn't touch store 1 while store 2 was down since people say etsy will ban ALL shops found to be linked. Didn't want to risk it.

I used the etsy website to find the niche and product idea, by going through the numbers of successful shops one by one. then I use sales samurai for actual keyword research. (that's paid) So, etsy.com, excel and sales samurai.
