That's always been the case .. Google has been advising against making your own backlinks since Day 1, and they aren't going to stop
Does that mean we shouldn't?
That's on you .. But SEO can be a sloooow game if you are depending on 100% natural inbound links.

Just Ignore those kind of articles. Backlinks are the key factor in ranking factor.
It depends on the quality of the Backlinks you are getting for your site.
Definitely you will get benefit if you are getting back links from good authority site having great content relevant to your niche.

Yes.Google takes the hammer out and hit you hard if the links are not natural or they don't look natural in GOOGLE's radar eyes.
If you want stay away from the spam scanner,you got two choices
1)Built it from scratch -naturally.
2)Make the google think you built it -naturally(Ofcourse)
Automated backlinks techniques are outdated and is the best way to get caught red handed by Google as we manipulate the links for the results on the SERP.
Build Backlinks with high DA. and you will be fine.

I see sites ranking first position for medium keywords just with private backlinks. That is in my niche. Not even hitting the actual keyword dude. So that should tell you something.
