Well if you want to get technical, there is no such thing as white hat SEO. Scritty is right - the second you start building backlinks to improve your rankings you are manipulating the search results, that is not white hat. Some people like to get holier than thou about the fact they do it by hand, but the reality is they are just going a much longer way about manipulating the SERPs.
With regards to short term vs long term, that is a load of bollocks. Everything you do with regards to SEO hangs on what Google decide to do with their next update, there is no possible way to guarantee that what you're doing now will have you ranking next year. Plenty of things that used to be seen as good practice now damage your site, and those things were being championed at the time as white hat methods that provide long-term benefits. What makes you think there's any difference with current 'recommended' techniques?
This long term/short term thing is a crock of shit. Something all the big "sensible" sites talk about as if it was fact - but I have never seen them link to any proof.
I'm not comparing a self built site with regular updates and regular community and zero linkbuilding on the one hand with some guy who builds 20 sites a day with 100% stolen content - and links with nothing but forum profiles, advertises with nothing but adsense or amazon and just "long tails" with "crash and burn" sites.
Yeah - 9 times outta ten the community guy will survive. 9 times outta ten the "crash and burn "site builder will lose his site (though what's the ROI?...The crash and burn might still have won and got a great return on his tiny investment - and not care about the crash!)
I'm talking about effective use of automation and outsourcing. Decent content (some syndication, some curation, a little "adaptation" and heaven forbid even some original thought and content thrown in for good measure) automated or subscribed link building.
It works - and there's nothing new about it. More. I doubt Google even care. The low hanging fruit is that the internet is still full of shit sites with SWL foot links only supporting them with 100% unreadable or scraped content.
Google's job isn't to police the internet - it isn't to provide a "better user experience" either.
It's to get the biggest dividend for shareholders and the biggest sustainable share price
The minute the value of a slightly cleaner index costs more than the cost of achieving these better results... you can bet your ass Goolge won't do it.
Id love to see these figures where (microniche culls aside) White hat sites have survived when BH sites haven't.
In microniche there were culls in 2010 and 2011 (but plenty survived).
Likewise a trip to Moz or Searchengineland or Matt Cutts blog is full of people QQing about their supposed "WH" site being destroyed by Google.
I promote using effective methods. been bounced now and then but never "hit hard", that's just the way of the internet, you learn to roll with the punches and having more than one niche/site helps here)
As for "Long lasting". Where's the proof that WH is better than "Off colour headware/effective"
My golfing holiday site has been around since 1996 and other than a few weeks in 2003 and a month or so in 2011 has been on page 1 for my key terms for 17 years.
How bloody long do you want long to be? How many lifetimes are you counting this in?
