Hello all,

What a great forum. I'm putting on the "black hat" this year. I've grown tired of building legitimate sites and watching them get beat by many of the techniques in here. Worse yet, I have a few sites that are penalized and got nowhere begging the gods of the engines for a reprieve. That irritates me to no end.

In that respect I decided on New Years eve to turn to the dark side after 14+ years of honest marketing on the web (I was around when AOL didn't provide access to the web, 9,600 baud was a dream and cost .10 a minute ). I'm a senior citizen in web years.

I'll let you know next year how I do. Keep up the good posts.

Thanks for all the encouragement. And yes I do remember the 1234567789-compuserve emails. It's funny what sticks out in your head... For me I think the best was when webcrawler, excite, hotbot, infoseek, altavista, opentext, yahoo, all the web and many more had their own spiders and databases. Heck, I had my own spider and database with it's own algo to boot!

I do have a couple of questions for anyone whos been around the block.

1. I operate a bunch of affiliate programs. For years I targeted specific site owners (To become affiliates of mine) and never ran into anyone doing techniques like this. I understand some of the work will get deleted, generate a few nasty emails and poison domains. In my case I'd love to ramp up existing sales without wrecking my white hat websites. Especially in the health/bizop arena. Has anyone heard of the actual affiliate program website getting hurt by blackhat activity? Say a refresh into a clean site or similar?

2. Everyone seems to be up on using proxies. Is this only to hide your IP? Somehow losing your dsl or broadband doens't seem all that bad when you consider there are 10 different providers. Am I missing something like having your physical address blacklisted amongst all of the providers?

3. I've been buying/downloading software and here's the list:
hrefer, rssgm, joe tierneys freebies (waiting for a trackback offer) rss evolution, rss magician. I have several boxes and laptops to run this stuff 24/7 on a fiber connection. Any thoughts on the missing "must have" software would be appreciated.

4. I've seen people claim old domains are better. I have some old ones (1996) that are parked without content. Is that considered old or do they have to rot on the web a while with something on them?
