$200/Month For FULL-TIME VA?

I used several VAs from several countries and the results was subpar. Tried from $145 per month to $400+, pay per work done - the result was always disappointing. And I am not talking some super complicated job. Things that inhouse staff do for a day, the VAs did for a week or more, and the quality was worse. And before anyone telling me that "i get what I paid for" - I hired people for 2x+ what they asked for the service, and still the quality was terrible.

I personally don't like, when people say... We can pay less money to Indians, Pakistan or Bangladesh to get the hard work done.
I think people should not judge about the decent pay in individual countries. I think every outsourcer has the right to get adequate money by working as a VA (no matter where they live).
Then you do not understand how the market work. If I can have someone in office for $1k, why I would hire someone half a world away for the same money? Especially when there are 10 other people that will be willing to work for 5 times less? You may think that is not "fair" to receive less money for the same work, but then the US worker can equally complain that you are not paying $1k rent.

No, you get me wrong. I didn't mean to compare VAs with the office workers. I meant every VA deserve adequate money depending on their skills.

Like,
If you hire someone in India to do data entry work for $200/month. In Bangladesh, you should hire for the same amount. Don't expect much lower, like for $50.

$200/m is just kind of a 'living wage' in some countries. But to suggest $400/ month wherever the VA might be from is very fair.

well it depends on what kind of work you want done from VA.

$200 is actually very good pay for a VA. People do much more (example: Our baby-sitter takes $140/m for working for 10 hrs * 30 days , yupp.. no leave.. ) in the sub continent for less than that. Try posting a requirement thread in the haf section here. You will get more than one, I am sure.

If you're not sure whether to hire them or not, why don't you give them a paid test run? I'm pretty sure if they are willing to accept 200/month they wouldn't mind having a test before you accept them.

It's basically VA vs VA. Paying less is not bad, paying next to nothing, just coz they need work is a bad thing to do.

So your babysitter is on $0.45 an hour? o_O

Does that include a room and food, or does she/he have to pay for that out of the earnings? I assume with those hours they live with you? You would think babysitter would pay more than online VA but I guess not.

Weird, but yes! "They" are quite happy with the salary too (we have two actually).

Nopes, no room (they live nearby though) and food. However, if we are home; and having some good lunch; we also order/make meals for them; because why not? We also keep snacks handy in case they need any. Basically, we consider them as our family members.

They have to stay from 9AM to 7PM, till we are back from office.
We do not stay home, as we have to go to work. That was the main reason we hired them. Also, they are quite good when it comes to handling my son, and doing general house keeping work.

I know it sounds very cruel, but believe me... people even work for less than that. You would laugh at me if you knew my first drawn salary. ;)

They still manage to live, because Calcutta/Kolkata is crazily cheap when it comes to food, travel and rent. Yes, it's a bit dirty; but you can still live for even $100 if you wanted to.

That's a decent price point. But if they demand more work related to content-writing, you should think twice.

I have several part time VA @ Philippines and entry level staff can be had for that money. As many others have said you need to train them and monitor them to get good output. I work directly with all my VA and I recruited / interviewed / hired all of them on my own. When you deal with a company and pay them $200/month you can expect them to take their cut and that lowers employee salary. 20% would lower it to $160 and I'm pretty sure that all of these VA agencies run on much higher margins. IMO you would get what you pay for.

Curious, do you think it's possible to find people with high-level (written) english at this price?

No, I've had full time VA who was a nurse and was a writer for me. I now have journalist degree graduate doing some writing for me. Expect to pay agency $700+ for a good writer since they will take their cut & they have more unskilled than skilled workers.

You can surely hire a VA for $200/month but that’s pretty low as far as that goes and you get what you pay for. So at that rate, the ones that are really worth $200 a month will require you to hold their hand and repeat/re-word everything to baby level x100 different ways to get it done right. Then they’ll forget everything the next day and you have to re-cover everything. The good ones will be bugging you for a raise all the time or disappear when you most need them.

That’s the reason you are getting “subpar” performance. Skilled people anywhere know their worth and will settle for nothing less.

. The good ones will be bugging you for a raise all the time or disappear when you most need them.

Exactly! The good ones are always in high demand. To get them, the highest bidder wins.

Well if they asked half of what you paid you still get what you pay for in this case even less. If you buy a shitty burger from a fast food chain and then pay 2x for that you still get the same product for double the price.
I am not saying you did anything wrong, I paid VA's exceptionally for valuable work done in my past company talking +$2000 a month for people from the Philippines, Nigeria etc. because I was able to and valued the work in % to the generated revenue.
What is important tho is that you screen your VA before hiring them for your work, interview them about their knowledge, get a feeling for their character etc. or else you will only get disappointed.
