last night I met someone (I hope he doesn't check these forums and figure out it's me)
he said he does SEO and he paid $20 grand for one .gov backlink
Does that sound right? I call bull

Not sure but it depend on what site that he talked about. There are so many free .gov .edu backlink that you can obtain by yourself but it came will poor quality, high obl, etc.

Only under rare circumstances would I consider this real.

If he is promoting a website which does disaster relief and he paid 20K for a link on the home page of the FEMA .gov website, yeah, I can see real value in that.

A random .gov link on a Senators page? A bit pointless.

For this to even make sense he would need to get real value or an ROI, and most fovernment pages do not provide that.

Bribing a state official for a backlink is new to me!

I've heard of bribing bloggers/people who work for big sites, but never gov. What if he loses reelection?

Or it could be a sponsorship and a "sponsors" page

Lol at the price.

I'd rather have a front page link on Fox News for a day than virtually any .gov link. They rarely push traffic like big news authorities do and its just one link, after all, so ranking from it alone seems questionable.

You're taking it deep.. Lol, losing election.

With 20k, i can build legits .gov website.

Well I don't see real value from this backlink in SEO benefit, but if the gov site is somewhat known or some high position site then it's more of an authority benefit to advertise on your site

I wouldn't pay $20k for any link because you can get some really great stuff with a lot of power and/or traffic for a fraction of this price. A link like this maybe nice in terms of a virtual penis length comparison with other SEOs, but far from being a good bang for the buck.
