2 Sites Ranking in the Same Niche?

Hi,

Has anyone had experience ranking 2 sites in the same niche. Out of the blue someone told me today this would cause both sites to be penalized however I really struggle to believe the validity of this claim.

I'm not talking to duplicate sites, I'm talking 2 sites, totally different themes and content with different back link profiles.

Any particular reason you would believe this to be true?

Yes ive done this several times, I try to have, as you said, different themes and backlinks profiles. Also I have them hosted on different servers too.

I believe it can be very effective, I try to have one targeted towards say the 'premium' side of the niche and other targeted towards buyers looking for the cheap option.

As long as you keep the footprints to a minimum I think you should be fine.
 
I have done this with no problem so far, both sites are on different servers though, backlink profile is quite different as well. Just get both sites on different hosting then it will cause no problem.
 
I don't understand why anyone would not do this. If you find a niche and it is wildly profitable you should build more sites in that niche.

This used to be a common practice. People would build and monetize a bunch of web 2.0s, all linking back to their main site. You could own the first page of Google. Now monetizing web 2.0s has gone out of style. It's still good strategy whether using web 2.0s or multiple sites of your own.
 
Just don't do anything daft like interlinking them all and you will be fine. If anything you should be encouraged to do it on the basis of multiple sites on page takes away more of the competition.
 
As long as you keep them independent (diff hosting/ip/seo profile) it will be profitable. I've been doing this for many years now, ranking 3 sites. Its good because you can actually try out different things with different sites and see the results and find out what works.
 
Just like Lbrown said, Am still using web2.0 to dominate the first page of google and i have more than 6sites on the first page.So go for it.

Not only is it OK, but it should be your goal. Why stop at one page in the top 10-50? I had one phrase just over a year ago that had 17 out of the top 20 ranking spots, from 17 different owned domains.

You have to be sure that the keyword is commercially viable for that level of effort, but by having multiple rankings, you have other pages 'in the wings' for any slaps/issues with one particular site/page.
