Checkout Godaddy for transfer prices. Usually they are below than reg fee as a special. No fee will be charged by Register.com if you want to transfer out.

Register.com wont charge you to transfer out after the one year lock in. Who ever you transfer too will charge you - last I checked GoDaddy costs $7.99 to transfer too (most places cost $9.99) you'd be better buying the domain elsewhere and not risking the $35 rebill

This is actually a good deal if you remove the pre approved payment.

Now you can test out multiple projects on the cheap, and transfer successful ones at the end of the year.
 
bastards got me for $4.95, sent me an email saying this is our last day for our $4.95 domain special, see they were coming down.

Transfer out is allowed but they try hard to stop you when you unlock your domain.
