I have tried reddit and I can tell you that there is no such thing as "un-monitezed content will get more votes". That's not how it works.
I submitted a funny image and get more upvotes than an informational article on "how to keep your vision healthy" with 0 ads or aff links
The key is undoubtedly getting Upvotes within first 15 mins of your post. You can easily get 100 - 200 traffic per day from reddit.
This coupled with factors like sub reddit number of subscribers, voting accounts karma etc etc. (all speculation btw)
