I'm one of those people who says to stay away from 1and1. They're ok until you need support, and then it takes 3 levels of inquiry to get through the ones replying with scripts.
Additionally, their process to cancel domains or move away from them is a nightmare. They're still better than godaddy though.
I try to stick to registrars who don't also do a lot of cut-rate shared hosting. They tend to be better at being registrars.
My firm recommendation is Resell.biz. They're an established company, the rates are fantastically good if you're doing any volume at all (I pay 7.25/.com), tech support is quick and speaks english natively. You can get someone on the phone quickly, and they (of course) provide free domain privacy.
They're really aimed at domainers, but work equally well for smaller people who only have 5 or 10 domains. I'm well on my way to a thousand domains with them.
