150 mbps vs 1 gigabyte Internet (page load speed)

Hello guys,

I currently have 150 mbps Internet. It’s fast but I notice sometimes it can be sluggish. Like loading larger pages (I.e Majestic) for the first time after clearing cache. Or loading (sometimes) pages with large amounts of text. Sometimes I can see the images loading (whereas it should be instant in most cases).

What I’m trying to figure out is - are the loading times because the websites are on slow servers? Or are they because 150mbps isn’t fast enough to instantly load pages? I don’t think I ever paid attention before because I went 50 -> 150 and it was clearly faster.

But now Comcast is offering 1
Gigabit in my area and I’m really tempted to get it. I want to be able to work FAST without having to wait around for sites to load. My PC is pretty good, i7-3930 6 core 3.2ghz, 32gb ram, 980ti, ssd. And I’ve already run every network tweak possible. I have DD-WRT on router, etc.

Anyone go from 150 -> 1 gigabit here? How were the results?

Yes but that’s all anyone ever talks about is the download speed. I don’t really care about the download speed (I don’t download much stuff - really only page load speed is important).

What about page load times? The same pages you loaded on 100-150 mbps — how fast do they load now?
 
I doubt it will help loading a web page much if at all - a web server can only push a page so fast, your limiting factor will be how much bandwidth the webserver allocates to your request.

You'll see an increase in speed when torrenting/downloading updates or files, but web pages probably not. If you think about it most web pages are less than 5 Megabytes in size, so your connection in theory should be able to download this file in less than a second - most of the waiting is multiple requests for files, or waiting for the browser to render the page.

Got 300Mbps/24MB at home, working with 5MB at uni - no noticable difference

Keep in mind that it will really depend on:

- Location of server you are downloading from (be it website or files), where Amazon and other large one have redundant hosting in multiple Geos, your regular site will just be in one location
- The server connection to the internet (often 100 mbit/250 if small private kind of server)
- Then of course your connection to the internet as well

Do a tracert on the IP of the target website and you will see how much/or little it is routed

That’s ridiculous - I went from 50 mbps to 150 mbps and the page load speed was clearly faster.

Those website are not on slow servers, those sites are quite big, so it takes time to load them, internet speed doesn't help in this place, so it's not worth to upgrade.

Stop posting nonsense to increase your post count. If the sites are on fast servers, and big, then Internet speed would be the single deciding factor in how quickly the pages load.

Keep in mind that it will really depend on:

Tracert will only show latency. I wsnt to know if both high latency and low latency pages will load faster. Tracert is irrelevant to this question.

Looks like you know shit how everything works. Why you asking then if you know better than others how everything works?

I went from 10mb, 50mb, 100mb, 300mb speeds and there is no difference.

I know how logic works. Your statement is the most counter intuitive nonsense I’ve ever seen. If a website is on a fast server, but it’s a big site, the only thing that is affecting the speed is the person trying to download it. 150 mbps (being the person has low latency) Internet downloads faster than 10 mbps Internet.

Did you not read the above message? Latency, location, and server speed are/were already accounted for. All those things being fast/good, 150 mbps is without a doubt faster at web browsing than 10mbps. There is simply no denying this fact.

I’ve had 10 -> 50 -> 150 as the years have gone by, and can say with 100% certainty that 50 is faster than 10 and 150 is faster than 150, in regards to download / loading pages with all variables being positive (low latency, fast servers, etc).

Obviously BHW wasn’t the right place to ask a networking question. Half of the responses here (in regards to this question) are gibberish written by college students who have 10mbps and try to justify to themselves why it’s as good as 150 mbps / 1gbps.

I usually have 25-50+ tabs open at once, between 3 browsers, some with constant connections. While running GSA on 2 laptop VPS’s (one constantly scraping, one posting) and Scrapebox on my main PC for many various reasons. While posting to my network using a custom script, while running a WAMP server and using php scripts that download / scan / filter external websites / domains, among other things.

If you’re a rookie you might not notice (even when I was a rookie I noticed back in 2010, the difference between 10 mbps and 50 mbps was staggering). But I notice. The difference between 10 mbps and 150 mbps is dramatic (to say the least).

You’re a college rook who has no idea what he’s talking about. The idea that 10 mbps while doing all of the tasks I mention above is the same as 150 mbps or 1 gbps is ignorant and incorrect.

Higher speeds are best when dealing with many users and/or having many connections open at once (I can easily reach 16000 connections at once). You’re a rook so you don’t do shit yet. But one day you’ll get there (if you keep going).

Try running 16000 connections and 20 mbps/sec (DD-WRT bandwidth stats) on a 10 mbps Internet connection, rook. Then get back to me about a placebo.

Instead of criticising answers here, perhaps read how Nginx, Lightspeed and Apache deal with multiple visitors and allocation of resources. It doesn't work how you think unfortunately.

I know how Apache allocates resources, I have multiple Apache serves (root access) both online and offline. All things being equal, latency, resources, etc.. the faster connection will load faster. How is this even a debate?
 
Page load speeds from 150mbps vs 1gps won't be much different if you are loading a simple website (possbily 0.5s-1s difference) it might not even noticeable because depending on how a website is build. For example, if a web developer is good, the main content will be loaded first on the page, anything slower to low will be loaded after (widgets, footer, etc) so to you the main content load speed isn't noticeably different. If you are loading complex websites that are bigger (maybe a page that's 10mb or more), then you might notice even more.
