This is a really great overview. It's always nice to see things synthesized into a sort of "checksheet" style listing.

I find that it's good to remind myself of the different types, to keep diversifying, gaining skills etc. With the list above, and the mastery of footprints, anyone can build some killer backlinks.

True, these are basic and root points to link building. You just need to learn how to use them suiting the need of your web site. Keep working on them and you will be good enough to beat your competitors.

Thanks

Thanks for the list. It's good to go back to the basics even though you think you've done SEO all your life! Good stuff OP

Can anyone recommend a Directory Submissions software. right now I use fast directory submitter but you can only use their directories and you have to pay per each domain.

I am looking for software that you can load directories in yourself and it is semi automatic or full.

When you mention blog syndication with ping.fm, how much "credit" will you get from google for submitting duplicate content. Also, the link from ping.fm carries its own url and not anchor text. How does this effect the quality of the link?

Quality of links would depend lot on content and its quality and uniqueness. After the latest Panda Update, google wants publishers to provide more relative and quality information to the users of the web sites. So if your content is unique and informative, any link made to them would count.

Thanks

I'm interested to hear what you think:

If you used all of these different elements, doing each of these things everyday, how long do you think it would take to get a high ranking on competitive keywords (such as MMO, gambling or weightloss)?

Thanks - thought the post was good btw!

Ranking will depend on other factors as well along with off page SEO like but not limited to domain age, content quality, on page SEO etc. These are basic things that we do for link building but we need to tweak them according to keywords competition.

Just one question: Most of the free web directories ask us to add reciprocal links, what are your thoughts about it? Are they worthful from the point to seo?

You don't need to add their links to your site, most of the sites will have 3 options for you:-

1.) Paid listing:- Approves really quickly.
2.) Free listing with reciprocal link:- Approved as soon as you add their links but google doesn't give such links much value these days.
3.) Free/Regular links:- These links normally takes around 2-3 months before these sites approve them but eventually they get approved. Free links are never worthless even if they coming over the time span.

Hope this helps.
