Micro niche sites are fine but don't build them with 250 word articles. Thin content is what will kill you. Use longer articles 1500 words etc and don't expect to rank a new micro niche site right away.
I actually use a one year plan when I register a new domain. I put up plenty of longer content rich articles and photos with proper on site SEO then ad good links that will stick such as edu links. 20 or 30 links are fine, don't go over board and be sure to use a good number of related keywords as link text.
After 1 year I see where the site is and if it should be built out with more content and links.
If it has gone no where at all I let the domain drop.
The one year domain renew date for each site is my wake up call to review each site for build out or drop.
If after 1 year the site has some search rank with the few articles and the few links then it will usually respond well if more and better content is added along with more off site links.
I do usually ad an adsense link block on the footer of each new site. Google is a for profit company and they seem to hate new aff sites but not new adsense sites as long as you don't go overboard with ads. If I am building an affilliate site I always make sure it has adsense link blocks also. This seems to work for me. I don't ever worry about google getting mad about my new sites. Google make hundreds of millions of $$ from adsense, do you think they will judge you badly for helping them accomplish that? No, they will judge you badly for building crappy sites with no content.
Got news for everyone, MFA or made for adsense sites are alive and doing very well and they always will be for as long as adsense exist. They just can't be built with thin crappy content and then be expected to do well or rank in the serps. This is what panda went after.
I also like to make sure to ad lots of photos also with each article. people like photos and so does google. I make sure to rename all photos to something that works for SEO and seem to get good traffic from google image search.
1000 will build a lot of small micro niche type sites or buy you lots of content for already established sites. or buy you a lot of SEO for your established sites.

Can't expect that with new sites but if you got 500 plus aged sites because you keep up your site building then you are going to end up in a very good place 5 to 10 years down the road. You will have one hell of a good passive income that has super potential for improvement if you come back to them and start updating and building them out.

Panda has not touched me at all because my sites have always been based on the concept of being small but well built with good informative content that visitors will want to explore and read. I build sites people will link to and tell others about because they cover the subject completely and look great.
I have used the concept of few well placed adsense ads and a seperite store section for people who are looking to buy something related to what your articles are about. if some one is willing to click on a link that says "visit our store" then they are more willing to buy something or click on an aff link if you have made them happy with good informative content. In other words if they like you then they will do you the favor of buying something from your store. Many people do look at it exactly like that, they know you are making a commision from that sale and they are not going to give that to you unless they think you deserve it.
The store subsection also makes the site easyer to build because you don't have to work in aff links to your articles. That often looks spamy. Then you can make the store look like a store without trying to work articles into your product descriptions or reviews.
My suggestion for spending that 1000 is build lots of nice small but well made sites with it and keep this up year after year with a long term plan. Call them new age micro niche sites.

It is easy to make 5 bucks per click. Most big popular insurance sites are just lead generation sites and suck ass for finding good information about insurance. I realized this and went out for a month and found every bit of info I could about insurance. I orderd brochures asked questions, made appointments with insurance agents and found questions that I wanted answers to, questions that were not being answered online because as I said, most big sites were just lead gathering sites, click here and fill out your name. Then I went out and built 10 insurance sites that concentrated on 10 insurance sub categories. I don't give much of a damn about competing with the big sites as it does not take many clicks to make some very good $$. I linked all 10 sites together via the menu with related keywords and insurance related subjects. Each site covers a type of insurance in depth with all the related subjects covered in depth. Guess what? I get a good amount of traffic for long tail keywords.
This 10 site network is only a little over 1 year old and is doing really well making me good $$ per click and is already making over 300.00 per month. No big deal I know but the point is this is no micro niche, it is supposed to be one of the most hard to rank competitive niches in the world and I'm killing it. Why, WTF is going on? simple, all the big time sites don't cover these subjects. Since I have done in depth long detailed original articles on every aspect of these insurance related subjects I am confident the site network will just keep growing and making more $$ every year because the sites are getting traffic, the traffic is sticking - people are staying on the sites and reading because that is why they came, to find in depth information on a complicated subject that was not being covered in depth by many top websites in a super competitive niche. Look at your insurance paperwork, do you understand that shit? no one does and people are searching for these obscure terms and subjects online trying to find out WTF they mean.
Don't be afraid of taking on the big niches because there is huge money to be made if you can find one and do in depth articles that no one else seems to be covering. Micro niches are not always the answer
